Every table deserves a title.

Add a caption above your table and it travels with it — into every PDF, Excel file, and image you export. Align it left, centre, or right with a single keyboard shortcut.

Benefits

Exports with the table in every format

The caption renders above the table in PDF, PNG, and JPEG exports. In Excel, it appears as a merged header row. In CSV, it is written as the first line. You set it once — it follows everywhere.

Three alignment options with keyboard shortcuts

Press Ctrl+L to left-align, Ctrl+E to centre, Ctrl+R to right-align — while the caption field is focused. No mouse needed to adjust the layout.

Used as the export filename

The caption text becomes the default filename when you export. 'Revenue by Quarter' exports as 'Revenue by Quarter.pdf' — not 'tablesmit-export.pdf'.

Required in academic and professional work

Tables in research papers, journal articles, and formal reports require numbered captions (Table 1, Table 2) with a brief description. The caption field is where that goes.

How it works

1

Click the caption field

The caption field appears above the table grid. It shows 'Add a table title or caption (optional)' as a placeholder. Click it to start typing.

2

Type your caption

Enter your title or caption text. For academic tables: 'Table 1: Comparison of study methodologies by sample size'. For reports: 'Revenue by quarter — FY2025'.

3

Align it (optional)

While the caption field is focused, press Ctrl+L (left), Ctrl+E (centre), or Ctrl+R (right) to set the alignment. The caption position updates instantly.

Use cases

  • Adding 'Table 1: Summary of key findings' to a research paper table before PDF export
  • Titling a pricing comparison table so the PDF filename reads 'Service Pricing 2025.pdf' rather than a generic name
  • Adding a centred caption to a table embedded in a Word document or Google Doc
  • Including a descriptive label above a data table shared as a PNG image in a presentation
