The problem with writing Markdown tables by hand

Use a Markdown table generator online to avoid manual pipe alignment. Markdown tables look simple at first. A few pipes, some dashes, and you have a table.

How Tablesmit generates Markdown

1. Build your table in Tablesmit — add rows and columns, type your content, resize columns, merge cells.
2. Open the Copy dropdown in the toolbar.
3. Choose Copy as Markdown.
4. Paste the Markdown anywhere that accepts it — GitHub, Notion, Stack Overflow, or your Markdown editor.

The output is a clean pipe table with aligned columns:

What gets preserved

• All cell content
• Column alignment (left, center, right — via colon placement)
• Header row separation
• Multiple rows and columns

What does not translate to Markdown

Markdown has a limited table syntax. Some formatting is lost in conversion:

• Merged cells (not supported in standard Markdown)
• Cell colours and background colours
• Border styles
• Font formatting (bold, italic — these are cell content, not table structure)

If you need this formatting, use HTML or LaTeX export instead.

When to use Markdown tables

• GitHub README files — every repository with a feature comparison or installation table
• Notion documents — Notion renders pipe tables natively
• Stack Overflow answers — answers with tables rank higher
• Dev.to and Hashnode articles — Markdown is the default format
• Static site generators — Hugo, Jekyll, and Astro all support Markdown tables

Both are available in the Copy dropdown. Choose Markdown for simplicity, HTML for fidelity.
