Paste this into any `.tex` file that loads `\usepackage[table]{xcolor}`, compile, and the colors render exactly as you set them.

Two things you need

1. The xcolor package with the table option

The LaTeX commands Tablesmit uses (\rowcolor, \columncolor, \textcolor) all come from the `xcolor` package. Add this to your document preamble:

\usepackage[table]{xcolor}

This is a standard package included in every LaTeX distribution — TeX Live, MiKTeX, Overleaf. No manual installation needed.

2. A table with some color set

In Tablesmit, apply your styling before exporting:

  • Header color: Use the Header Options panel in the left sidebar. Pick any background colour for your header row.
  • Header text color: The active table theme determines this. Dark themes use white text; light themes use dark text. It carries through automatically.
  • Row colors: Use the Color Panel in the right sidebar to set individual row colours. Or apply a theme like Striped which alternates row backgrounds.
  • Column colors: Set a column color from the column header's right-click menu or the Color Panel.

Then click Export → LaTeX. The colours are in the output.

When this matters

Colored tables are standard in many academic fields:

  • Conference posters need visual hierarchy — a colored header and alternating rows make the table readable from a distance.
  • Presentations (Beamer) use colored tables to maintain slide theme consistency.
  • Journal submissions increasingly expect visually structured tables, especially in economics and the life sciences.
  • Theses and dissertations often use colour-coded tables to distinguish data groups across chapters.

Common questions

Can I export without colors?

Yes. Tables with no custom colors set export as plain LaTeX tables with no \rowcolor or \columncolor commands. The color export only adds markup for cells that actually have a color applied.

What about \cellcolor for individual cells?

Yes. If you set a background color on a specific cell (via the right-click context menu or Color Panel), the export wraps that cell in \cellcolor[HTML]{...}. This works alongside row and column colors.

Does copy-as-LaTeX preserve colors too?

Yes. The Copy dropdown in the toolbar includes a "Copy as LaTeX" option that generates the same color-aware LaTeX code as the file export. Paste directly into your editor.
